Realtor Best Practices – Resolving Complaints

Today’s eMemo contains the following updates:

  • Best practices for resolving complaints

Dear members,

The heightened pace of activity over the past year and a half has not only resulted in more buying and selling opportunities for REALTORS® but has also brought with it a corresponding rise in the opportunities for misunderstandings and complaints. While some of these can be sorted on a realtor-to-realtor basis, others may be best resolved by consulting with your office.

For example, FVREB recommends that concerns regarding the following areas be reported first to your Member-Link and/or Managing Broker:

  • Advertising (print, online, social media)
  • Real estate Signage
  • Trademark usage
  • The MLS® System
  • The Rules of Cooperation
  • CREA’s REALTOR® Code and Standards of Business Practice

With respect to signage, concerns regarding placement, size, quantity, or any other matter that falls under the jurisdiction of the local municipality should be reported directly to the municipality. Note that FVREB is not able to confirm in every instance if signage complies with all local government regulations, therefore we ask that you first report your concerns to the specific municipality to handle any breach of signage by-laws.

Complaints or criticisms regarding another Member should first be brought to the attention of that member’s office in an attempt to resolve the situation. If the matter cannot be settled to the satisfaction of all concerned, a formal complaint can be made using the Complaint Form on REALTOR Link®.

For concerns regarding a REALTOR® who is not a Member of the FVREB, please address your concerns directly to the appropriate real estate board/association. The following contact information can be used for Boards bound by The Rules of Cooperation:
