Thoughtful communication plays a key role in shaping how REALTORS® are perceived and in upholding the integrity of the profession.
REALTORS® are encouraged to express their opinions and communicate openly both with each other and with the public. However, it’s important to balance the right to express their opinions with a commitment to professionalism, pride in the profession and a shared responsibility to foster a culture of continuous improvement within the real estate industry.
Promoting professionalism is one of FVREB’s strategic priorities and is at core of our newly developed Mission and Vision Statements, empowering REALTORS® through tools, education, and advocacy that uphold, amongst other things, professional standards. What does that look like in action?:
- Speak respectfully;
- Encourage conversation instead of trying to bully others into agreement
- Base your opinion on reasoned thought and facts rather than rumor and speculation;
- Consider whether your opinion could undermine public confidence or bring the real estate industry into disrepute;
- Reflect on whether your message makes REALTORS® seem less competent or trustworthy; and
- Think about how respected colleagues might receive your message.
Encouraging respectful conversation and communication will lead to increased professionalism and advancement of the real estate industry through innovative ideas and creativity.
