How to make your newsletters stand out in every inbox
When done right, email marketing can be a powerful tool that will take your business to the next level. It helps with customer engagement and retention, establishes your brand image, improves sales and leads and more, while being affordable. According to a HubSpot study, 99% of consumers check their email every day and email is by far the preferred way to receive updates from brands.
Our inboxes are constantly receiving new emails. Make your emails stand out from inbox clutter with these tips.
- Don’t take the email subject line for granted
People judge an email by its cover. Catch your subscribers’ attention and prompt them to open the email with strong (not spammy) subject lines.
Pro-tip: Incorporate question words (How to…) and numbers (5 ways to…) to get your subscribers to click on your email.
- Take a mobile-first approach to email designs
Nearly 1 in 5 email campaigns is NOT optimized for mobile devices. Nobody likes looking at a wonky layout or zooming in to read text. You are potentially leaving out a large portion of your subscribers if your newsletters are not mobile-friendly.
- Include a clear call-to-action (CTA)
Your CTA button should lead to a landing page, rather than your homepage, and the tone and language should point toward a specific purpose.
Pro-tip: Make your CTA buttons pop out with contrasting or bright colours. - Use images strategically and align them with your branding
Create an aesthetic-looking newsletter that is also easy to read, looks professional, and on brand. Include effective pictures, GIFs, graphs, charts or maps that match the purpose of your newsletter.
Resize and optimize your images before putting them in the email to cut down on the file size of your newsletter and its download time. Emails that are too image-heavy may be sent to your spam folders.
Pro-tip: Add alternative text (alt text), which is a short description of an image, for email accessibility. This is especially important for people who use screen readers.
- Include valuable content
All the trappings of a great newsletter would not mean a thing if you don’t provide value for your subscribers.
