John Armeaneau Award Alumni Spotlight: Jim McCaughan

The John Armeneau Professional Award, honours REALTORS® who reflect the values John Armeneau embodied throughout his career: strong ethics, generosity, mentorship, and a dedication to leaving the profession stronger than they found it.

In 1997 the award went to Jim McCaughan — FVREB Past-Chair and BCREA Professional Services Support Advisor — whose career has been shaped by service, education, and leadership within organized real estate.

Jim describes receiving the award as particularly meaningful, noting that he had the opportunity to work closely with John Armeneau. “I knew firsthand his passion for creating a positive professional image through consistently high standards of ethics, combined with courtesy and cooperation with colleagues,” he says. Being selected as the first recipient of the award after it was renamed in John’s honour was an experience Jim considers a true privilege.

Jim says the spirit of the award is rooted in service. “It represents a passion to serve our real estate consumers with excellence and integrity,” he says.

That perspective continues to guide Jim today. “Every day, I am grateful to work in the real estate profession, and I constantly seek opportunities to enhance the public perception of the great value that REALTORS® bring to their clients,” he says. A simple message he created more than 40 years ago still hangs on his wall as a daily reminder of that mindset: “Today is going to be a great day because I am going to make it a great day.”

His message is a reminder that leadership often happens quietly, through consistency, integrity, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.
