Professionalism and integrity are not optional in this industry, especially in your dealings with the regulator that governs your licence.
In a recent decision, the BC Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) cancelled the licence of a REALTOR® who failed to complete a mandatory ethics course and instead had a family member attend and impersonate him online. When questioned, the licensee misled BCFSA multiple times, claiming he had attended the course and providing false explanations when asked to verify his identity.
BCFSA staff identified inconsistencies during the session, and the participant ultimately left before completing the course. The licensee later admitted to the deception and signed a Consent Order acknowledging both professional misconduct and conduct unbecoming a licensee.
The outcome was serious: licence cancellation and $4,150 in enforcement costs.
This case is a clear reminder that honesty and accountability are fundamental expectations of all REALTORS®. Attempts to mislead the regulator, particularly in required education, will not be tolerated and can have career-ending consequences.
Your licence is built on trust. Uphold it by acting with integrity in every interaction.
