Compliance with Municipal Sign Bylaws

The FVREB Professional Standards Department has received an urgent communication from a City of Surrey Bylaw Officer outlining concerns about unpermitted signage throughout Surrey. This tarnishes the reputation and brand of FVREB REALTORS®, contrary to Section 6.08 of the Rules of Cooperation (RoC):

  • A Member shall not conduct themselves nor permit their employees to conduct themselves in such a manner as to prejudice their own reputation or the reputation of the Board.

Non-compliance with municipal signage bylaws also demonstrates gross disrespect for the municipalities in which you serve and work.

The Officer stated “[t]here are numerous (too many to mention) REALTORS® leaving their open house signs on street corners permanently through the week until the following open house they have scheduled. Signs are only permitted the day of the open house.” The Officer also stated that “these signs are really getting out of hand. I’m trying to stay on top of them, but I just can’t keep up.”

The Officer sent photos and concerns about specific signs (not just open house signs). The Professional Standards Department will deal with each of those cases directly.

REALTORS® are reminded that Section 8 of the ROC requires real estate signs to comply with local government (municipal) bylaws. Further, Article 13 of the REALTOR® Code provides that all real estate signs must include the name of the brokerage.

We draw your attention to the recently published FVREB article Compliance with Real Estate Signage Requirements is Mandatory.

The Professional Standards Department will refer all signage complaints to the Professional Conduct Committee to determine appropriate disciplinary action.
