November is Radon Action Month: What REALTORS® Need to Know

November marks Radon Action Month, a time when British Columbians will see, hear, and read more about the invisible but very real dangers of radon gas through a province-wide public awareness campaign. The campaign aims to educate homeowners and REALTORS® alike about the risks of radon exposure, the importance of testing, and the steps that can be taken to keep homes safe.

Radon is an odourless, invisible radioactive gas that seeps into homes through cracks and gaps in the foundation. Prolonged exposure can damage lung cells and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in Canada. As trusted professionals guiding clients through one of their largest life investments, REALTORS® play an important role in helping buyers and sellers understand radon risks, mitigation options, and testing requirements, particularly in regions of BC known for higher radon levels.

Throughout November, REALTORS® are encouraged to visit RadonKills.ca/BC for valuable information and resources. BCREA will also be sharing additional materials, including blog posts, FAQs, and checklists. To deepen your knowledge, take advantage of BCREA’s six Professional Development courses that address radon or register for upcoming events like the Radon-Focused Community of Practice session on November 19 and the BC Lung Foundation’s annual Radon Webinar on November 25 (eligible for two self-directed PD hours).

Strengthening your understanding of radon helps you better protect your clients, and contribute to a safer, healthier BC.
