TREB releases sales data after Competition Tribunal ruling

On August 23, 2018, the Supreme Court of Canada announced it had declined an appeal by the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) over a 2016 Competition Tribunal decision to remove restrictions that prevent TREB’s members from posting home-sale data on virtual office websites.

After the announcement, Board President John Barbisan said on the matter:

“While the decision is independent to TREB, we have been watching this matter unfold and determining to what degree it impacts our Board and membership. We continue to work with our MLSLink partner, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, as well as CREA and our legal advisors to understand the implications of this decision.”

Yesterday, on Tuesday, September 18, TREB announced that its members could begin to publish home sales data from the Greater Toronto Area on password-protected websites.

The Board of Directors and staff have been paying close attention to ongoing developments and continue to work with partner boards to explore potential options moving forward.

President John Barbisan has spoken with a number of media outlets on the matter to provide perspective on the potential impacts the release of TREB’s data might have. You can read his most recent comments here:
