An update on the ORE discussions for a single organization

In recent months, we’ve been referencing some exciting conversations that have been happening across our province about the possible formation of a new, single organization that would replace the existing local real estate boards and BCREA.

Recently, a new website, www.realtorsofbc.ca, was launched that has details on the benefits to members, and some information about a province-wide membership vote that will ask you whether or not you support this change.

The new organization, REALTORS® of BC, would have multiple chapters across British Columbia, six regional branch offices and a central service centre. It’s designed to:

  • benefit all REALTORS® across the province,
  • reduce overlap and inefficiencies that we have under the current system of multiple boards,
  • maintain high and consistent professional standards for all members,
  • harmonize fees, (with no fee increases to any member and 30% seeing a decrease)
  • give organized real estate a unified and stronger voice, and
  • enable REALTORS® to better serve clients and grow their business.

By eliminating duplication and inefficiencies, there is approximately $10 million of cost savings that will be realized each year which would be re-invested into services that matter most to REALTORS® across BC, while at the same time reducing administrative burdens and costs to members.

It is important to note that no member services would be lost with the move to a new organization, and all members across the province would have access to enhanced services, with more flexibility in how to access them. The change would also result in a single MLS® system with broader and more consistent data and improved tools and analytics.

The ultimate decision on whether the FVREB moves to the new organization – REALTORS® of BC – will be made by members. Right now, we’re aiming for a vote on June 28, 2016 at a Special General Meeting to be hosted in Langley. This vote is planned to take place on the same day/time as all the Boards across the province. Before then, FVREB Directors and staff will be out talking with you, gathering your feedback and answering questions in townhall-style meetings, office meetings and one-on-one. Of course your thoughts by email are always welcome.

If the vote from FVREB members confirms a desire to make the move, transitional planning will begin immediately to incorporate our Board into REALTORS® of BC. If the vote is unsuccessful, our Board as it exists will remain in place, while other boards that vote in favour, if there is enough support, will create REALTORS® of BC and build a new organization.

All information about the project, including details on how the new organization would be structured and operated and how it will benefit each of you, is now available at: www.realtorsofbc.ca. More details will be added to the website over the next few months, so please visit often.
